Description

Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing – CLSI Approved

Detailed Product Description:

Unlock Accurate Antimicrobial Testing with Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA)

Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) is an essential medium widely used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of rapidly growing bacteria, following the Bauer-Kirby method. This high-quality agar is standardized by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), ensuring reliable and reproducible results crucial for clinical microbiology laboratories.

Key Features:

  • Standardized Formulation: Comprising beef infusion solids, soluble starch, acid hydrolysis of casein, and agar, MHA supports optimal growth conditions for aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria.
  • Low Thymine Content: Designed to minimize thymine and thymidine levels, preventing interference with sulfonamide and trimethoprim activity.
  • Recommended Ion Concentration: Calcium and magnesium levels are adjusted to enhance the efficacy of aminoglycoside antibiotics, making it suitable for various antimicrobial tests.

Product Specifications:

  • Approximate Formula:
    • Beef infusion solids: 6.0 g
    • Soluble starch: 1.5 g
    • Acid hydrolysis of casein: 17.5 g
    • Agar: 17.0 g
  • Final pH: 7.3 ± 0.1 at 25°C
  • Appearance:
    • Dehydrated medium: Free-flowing yellowish powder
    • Prepared medium: Yellowish transparent gel

Directions for Use:

  1. Preparation: Suspend 42.0 g of MHA in 1 liter of distilled or deionized water.
  2. Mixing and Sterilization: Heat with agitation, boil for one minute, and sterilize at 121°C (15 lbs.) for 15 minutes.
  3. Cooling: Cool to 40-45°C before pouring into Petri dishes. Avoid overheating.

Quality Control:

Cultural characteristics should be verified after incubation at 36 ± 1°C for 18-24 hours to ensure optimal growth performance.

Storage Conditions:

  • Shelf Life: 3 years from the manufacturing date when stored properly.
  • Storage Temperature: Keep tightly capped at 5-30°C. Prepared medium can be stored at 2-8°C, shielded from direct light.

Precautions:

This medium is intended for laboratory use only. Do not use dehydrated medium that is past its shelf life or shows caking or color variation.

Optimize Your Antimicrobial Testing with MHA:

Mueller-Hinton Agar remains a trusted choice for laboratories focusing on antibiotic susceptibility, microbial analysis, and clinical diagnostics. Ensure precise and dependable testing of pathogens with our premium MHA.
